The Toronto Star has won more than 30 National Newspaper Awards and was once known as “the newspaper that predated the nation” for its historical role in building a sense of national identity and providing coverage of the First World War to Canadians on the home front. It publishes an entertainment section called Starweek every Thursday,with a focus on Canadian celebrities.

The Star is owned by Toronto Star Newspapers Limited, which also owns several other daily newspapers in the Greater Toronto Area including the Hamilton Spectator and The Waterloo Region Record. It is published daily in broadsheet format and its Sunday edition, the Toronto Star Sunday Edition, is delivered to subscribers throughout Ontario as part of the Star’s distribution arrangements with competing newspaper publishers in that province.

In 2007, the paper’s average weekday circulation was82,594 copies, down from the year before. Its Sunday circulation of 95,685 copies was also down from 2006’s figure of 115,779 copies.

As of December 31, 2007, the paper had an average issue readership of 1.6 million compared to 1.7 million the previous year.
