The Hindu is an Indian English-language daily newspaper founded in 1878. It is published by Kasturi & Sons Ltd, which is owned by a family of journalists and publishers who are originally from Tamil Nadu. The Hindu was founded to voice the opinion of the members of the Indian National Congress; to counter the British-owned Indian Express, which was perceived to be supportive of the interests of British merchants.

The newspaper has an online presence in nine languages with regional editions for Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, and New Delhi. In total, it publishes eleven languages including English, Hindi, and Urdu on a daily basis. The English daily was founded in Mumbai on 20 September 1878 by a group of prominent individuals in the Indian National Congress including Shyamji Krishna Varma, Dadabhai Naoroji, Pherozeshah Mehta, and Womesh Chandra Bonnerjee as a voice for freedom of expression and to agitate against British rule. It is currently owned by The Hindu Group, which also publishes three other newspapers: Dinamalar in Tamil, Malayala Manoramain Malayalam, and Pudhari in Marathi.
