The National Post is a Canadian English-language national newspaper published Mondays through Saturdays. Founded in 1998 by Conrad Black and as of 2004, Barbara Amiel, it is the successor to the old Financial Post, which was published from 1937 until Black acquired and renamed the paper in 1998. The Post is well known for its conservative editorial and commentary, in contrast to the left-leaning editorial page of The Globe and Mail.
The National Post is a member of the Canadian Newspaper Association (CNA). It has been owned by the Postmedia Network since 2010.
The history of the Canada National Post newspaper
Canada’s National Post newspaper was established in 1998 and has since become the country’s most widely read and influential newspaper. Its print edition is published six days a week, while its digital edition is updated daily.
The National Post was founded by Conrad Black, who also owns several other newspapers in North America. He had been working as the CEO of Hollinger Inc., which owned The Daily Telegraph in London as well as a number of smaller papers in Canada.
The National Post is Canada's second-largest newspaper by circulation after The Globe and Mail, with an average daily readership of220,000. It is published six days a week by CanWest Global Communications.
The National Post was not without controversy in its early years. Some of the columnists were derided as being "out of touch" with Canadian values, and on at least one occasion, columnist Christie Blatchford came under fire for a column that seemed to many to be racist (though she vigorously denied this). The paper has also been criticized for having too many American writers. As well, it has been accused of having a pro-Israel bias in its Middle East coverage. The paper has also been criticized for being too right-wing and supportive of the Canadian Alliance and Conservative Party of Canada, to which the Post's owner Conrad Black is closely tied. The paper's editorial stance on many issues is seen as being generally conservative, although the newspaper itself describes itself as "a modern liberal voice in the country."
