Calgary Herald has been publishing in Calgary since November 1, 1948. The newspaper was started by two prominent local businessmen: Patrick Burns and Norman F. Fraser.
The first edition of the paper was printed on a hand-operated press in the old Clarion building at 4th Street and 1st Avenue North. At that time, Calgary had five daily newspapers and there were more than 100 reporters working for the five papers.
In the 1950s, the Calgary Herald moved to a new building on Stephen Avenue, where it would remain for more than 50 years. The building was originally known as the "Calgary Herald Building" but has since been renamed "The New Calgary Herald Building" by its owners, Postmedia Network Inc. In 1967, the Calgary Herald absorbed the rival "Calgary Albertan". The following year, it launched a European edition called "Calgary Today".
In1973, the newspaper moved to a new building on the corner of 7th Avenue and 1st Street S.W., which at the time was an outdoor mall. The building was demolished in 1989 and replaced with Calgary's first skyscraper, "The Herald", which is now known as Pacific Life Tower. In 1989, the newspaper launched a separate business section called "Business Alberta".
In 1990, the Calgary Herald moved to its current location in downtown Calgary on 9th Avenue S.W., which was originally the Calgary Herald's first building in 1883. In 1995, the newspaper launched "Calgary.com", which would later become one of Canada's largest newspaper websites.
In 1997, the Calgary Herald became part of Southam Newspapers as it was being bought by Conrad Black and his associates, who already owned the "National Post". In 2000, Canwest Global made Canadian media history with its $3.5 billion purchase of Southam Newspapers (including the "Herald"), taking on $2.6 billion in debt to do so.
